Vibrant Year-Round Playground

A City Born of Gold

Long before tourists flocked to Mammoth Lakes for skiing or mountain biking, the Mono people first settled here, thriving amidst the rugged beauty. By 1877, the allure of gold transformed this serene spot into Mammoth City, swelling with prospectors. This rush was fleeting, and by the 1900s, tourism began shaping its economy. Much of this was fueled by the famed naturalist, conservationist, and author, John Muir, whose rich accounts of the region sparked the imagination of the public nationwide.

The New White Gold

In the mid-1900s a local hydrographer, Dave McCoy, noticed that Mammoth Mountain consistently held more snow than the surrounding mountains. An avid skier, he bought a tow rope and spent some winters erecting and using it for skiing on the mountain. In 1953 the US Forest Service awarded him a permit to operate a ski resort and by 1955 the first ski lift was built and the rest, as we say, is history.

Today, historical events have woven a rich cultural tapestry, making Mammoth Lakes a destination steeped in history and a vibrant community of explorers, athletes, artists, and visionaries.

Hi! I’m Gigi.

I’m madly in love with the Eastern Sierra. I’ve lived in Bishop for almost 20-years, exploring and experiencing the Eastside of California. For the past 8-years I’ve published articles about my gorgeous hometown and all there is to do here. Countless hours of investigating, photographing, videoing, and, best of all, enjoying the Eastern Sierra has produced a treasure trove of content that just gets bigger and better.

I’d like to share it with you.
